15 Summer Activities to Help your Kids Appreciate Nature

What are your kids doing this Summer? For many of us Summer time with the kids is a time to enjoy the outdoors, the sunshine and if you’re lucky the ocean.

As much as kids love Summer holidays, keeping them busy can be a real chore! If you’ve not got the luxury of a Summer camp then it’s up to you as parent to find things for the youngsters to keep busy with.

Failing that, your kids might spend all their time in front of a computer, tablet, phone or other screen and research has shown that spending too much time in front of a screen can have a detrimental effect on the health and wellbeing of children.

Studies have shown that taking part in nature-based activities helps people who are suffering from mental ill-health and can contribute to a reduction in levels of anxiety, stress, and depression. In fact, a daily walk in nature has showed decreased activity in a region of the brain associated with a key factor in depression.

One in four people are estimated to experience bouts of mental ill health and it’s on the rise. Prescription medication of antidepressants are also at a record high level and the demand for more invasive treatments are also on the rise. Health and social care commissioners are examining and commissioning different options for cost effective services for mental health and one of these options is a daily walk of 90 minutes or more. We need to learn from the past when kids got excited to spend their time climbing trees and building dens rather than spending hours inside.

Joe at Nature Rated understands this all too well and has put together an infographic on 15 Summer activities to help your kids appreciate nature.

This is what it looks like:

Happy 4th of July!

I hope everyone is having a fun and safe day!

Baby baby and I have had an eventful day so far and after a short nap…it will continue with fireworks! I’ll update later tonight, for now here’s a picture from earlier today =)

Our day started early. We had a few options for the Fourth…of course, my first thought always is” let’s go to to parks.” lol. Then, I wanted to relax and either stay close to home or spend time with family. So, that left going to a parade that is in Lake Forest or venturing out to my sister’s place in Huntington Beach. We opted for Huntington Beach. Main street has one of the best Fourth of July parades. I grew up going just about every year! I wanted to be super mom and decorate a wagon or our bikes with streamers but, after a long week….I just didn’t have the time =( After the parade we had a nice lunch, watermelon and all! Baby baby played with the pups and eventually we took a nap. By the time our nap was over, Mav was home and we were able to watch the fireworks at a nearby park. Overall, a great fourth and an awesome weekend. A new vlog is currently in the works…..the plan is to upload it this week!! In the meanwhile, my old school blog posts will have to do ;p

We celebrated the 4th of July holiday weekend with BBQs, beaches, family, and fireworks! I was excited because Mav got an extra day off and was able to spend a long weekend with Baby Baby and I. This weekend also continued the journey of baby baby being a wild boy.I love to watch his curiosity as he explores his surroundings.I just can’t believe how mobile he is becoming and the way he just babbles away! All these milestones are exciting, however they are happening so fast! Over the weekend we also got the opportunity to try out some new playards, foods, and toys! I’m reviewing a few of them now and found some “must haves” during the first year! I’ll share them soon! The 4th was such a blast and I wish we could go back, but at least we took pictures, lol! I guess all we can do is plan more adventures!
